Structure and Written Expression (Meet 1)


Exercise A:
6. The new student in the class very talkative and friendly.
The sentence is wrong, because only has a subject but doesn’t have a verb. To complete the correct sentence should be used ‘to be’.
And the correct sentence is: The new student in the class is very talkative and friendly.
Note: subject: new student, to be: is

Exercise B:
6. In the office of the building across the street from the park on the corner.
The sentence is wrong, because there is no subject and verb.
So the right sentence: They are in the office of the building across the street from the park on the corner.
Note: subject: they, verb: are

TOEFL Exercise:
1.       Mark Twain......... the years after the Civil War the “Gilded Age.”
      A.      Called      B. He called      C. Calling      D. His calls
Answer (A) is the best answer because ‘after’ in this sentence is past tense. And ‘called’ is simple past tense.
Answer (B) and (D) are not correct because the sentence has a subject: Mark Twain
Answer (C) is not correct because calling is simple present tense.
